Ähtäri

English

Proper noun

Ähtäri

  1. A town and municipality of South Ostrobothnia, Finland

Translations

Finnish

Etymology

Uncertain. Probably from an original lake name *Ätsävesi, *Ätsäjärvi (> *Ätsäri > Ähtäri). One possibility is that the initial part is of Sami origin, akin to Northern Sami ahcit.[1] Rahkonen (2013) however does not consider this likely, and speculates that the -äri ending may in fact be original as well, although he considers it more likely that the original form was closer to Ähtävä.[2]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈæhtæri/, [ˈæht̪æri]
  • Rhymes: -æhtæri
  • Syllabification(key): Äh‧tä‧ri
