šluoti

Lithuanian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ślṓuˀtei, further perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlewH- (“to cleanse”) (whence Latin cluō (“to cleanse”), Ancient Greek κλύζω (klúzō, “to wash”)). Possibly related to dialectal Proto-Slavic *slavina (“valve, tap”) (if not a Latin borrowing) and hydronyms *Sluja (“r. Sluja”), *Slovǫta (“Upper Dnieper”), Polish Sława.

Verb

šlúoti (third-person present tense šluoja, third-person past tense šlavo)
