σαίρω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

This word is commonly connected with σύρω (súrō, “to drag, draw”). According to Beekes, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *twer-, like Sanskrit त्वरते (tvarate, “to hurry”) and Proto-Germanic *þweraną (“to stir”). Connection with ὀτρύνω (otrúnō, “to stir up, encourage”) is highly improbable.
