χέραδος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Clearly related to χαράδρα (kharádra, “gorge, ravine; torrent”) and thus from Pre-Greek. The older connection with χαράσσω (kharássō, “to carve, engrave”) must be given up.

Pronunciation

Noun

χέρᾰδος • (khérados) n (genitive χερᾰ́δεος); third declension

  1. silt, debris, gravel and rubbish, brought down by torrents

Inflection

  • χεράς (kherás, “pebble, gravel”)
