From Proto-Slavic *žiti (compare Belarusian жыць (žycʹ), Ukrainian жи́ти (žýty), Old Church Slavonic жити (žiti)), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeih₃w- (“to live”). Cognate to Lithuanian gyvénti, Sanskrit जीवति (jīvati), Latin vīvō.
