копить

Russian

Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic копити (kopiti, “to amass, to gather, e.g. people for an army”), from Proto-Slavic *kopiti (“to stack, to pile, e.g. hay”), from *kopa (“heap, pile”), from *kopati, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kop-, probably ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (“to strike, beat”).
