դէպ

Old Armenian

Etymology

An Iranian borrowing։ compare Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫅𐫏𐫁 (dyb /dēb/), Parthian 𐫅𐫏𐫁 (dyb /dēb/, “fortune, luck”).[1] Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Iranian *diHp- (“to shine, light up”); see Cheung and Sanskrit दीप् (dīp, “to blaze, to glow”) for more on the root.[2]
