Etymology
The root is թող- (tʻoł-) and is same with the word թոյլ (tʻoyl, “weak”); the original spelling of both is թոյղ (tʻoył), of uncertain origin. The root թող- (tʻoł-) is used independently as an adverb and preposition թող (tʻoł) and in the phrases թող լիք լինել (tʻoł likʻ linel, “to be abandoned, outcast”), բարձ եւ թող առնել (barj ew tʻoł aṙnel, “to abandon”).
According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *telh₂-.
