הנדסה

Hebrew

Root
⁧ה־נ־ד־ס⁩ (h-n-d-s)

Etymology

From Arabic ⁧هَنْدَسَة⁩ (handasa), from the same Iranic source as modern Persian ⁧اندازه⁩ (andâze, “measuring”).[1]

Pronunciation

  • (file)

Noun

⁧הַנְדָּסָה⁩ • (handasá) f (plural indefinite ⁧הנדסות⁩, singular construct ⁧הנדסת־⁩)

  1. (dated or archaic) Geometry.
    Synonym: ⁧גֵּאוֹמֶטְרְיָה⁩ (geométrya)
  2. Engineering; the application of science and the professions, taken collectively, directed thereto.

Usage notes

  • Whereas in English, the noun engineering is frequently used attributively (as in “engineering applications”, “engineering mechanics”, and so on), in Hebrew, the noun ⁧הנדסה⁩ is not usually used this way, the adjective ⁧הנדסי⁩ (handasí) being used instead.
