Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wʾc- /wāz-/), from Proto-Iranian *wāz- (“to play, contend”), probably from a blend of Proto-Iranian *wan- (“to win”) +‎ *Haz- (“to drive”), from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (“to love, wish”) + Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ- (“to drive”), respectively. Likely related to Sanskrit वाज (vāja, “contest; conflict; battle”).
