سقصى

Moroccan Arabic

Etymology

Root
⁧س ق ص ي⁩
2 terms

Inherited from common Maghrebi Arabic ⁧سقصى⁩ (saqṣa), also ⁧سقسى⁩ (saqsa). Apparently an alteration of Arabic ⁧اِسْتَقْصَى⁩ (istaqṣā, “to investigate, fathom, inquire”). In Moroccan Arabic, a new root ⁧س ق ص ي⁩ was derived from this. Compare Maltese saqsa, staqsa.
