شبه الجزيرة العربية

Arabic

Etymology

Composed of شِبْه‎ (šibh, “quasi-”) +‎ جَزِيرَة‎ (jazīra, “island”) +‎ عَرَبِيَّة‎ (ʕarabiyya, “Arab, Arabian”). شِبْه جَزِيرَة‎ (šibh jazīra) by itself means "peninsula"; note, however, that عَرَبِيَّة‎ (ʕarabiyya, “Arabian”) modifies جَزِيرَة‎ (jazīra) rather than شِبْه‎ (šibh).

Proper noun

شِبْه ٱلْجَزِيرَة ٱلْعَرَبِيَّة‎ • (šibh al-jazīra l-ʿarabiyya) f

  1. Arabian Peninsula

Declension

In fully declined Classical Arabic, شِبْهُ الجَزِيرَةِ العَرَبِيَّةِ (šibhu l-jazīrati l-ʕarabiyyati). شِبْه‎ (šibh, “quasi-”) is in the construct state, and both following terms are in the genitive case, with عَرَبِيَّة‎ (ʕarabiyya, “Arabian”) an adjectival modifier of جَزِيرَة‎ (jazīra, “island”), as described above.
