Arabic

شِيح – Artemisia scoparia

Etymology

Borrowed from Aramaic attested as Classical Syriac ܣܝܺܚܳܐ (sīḥā) and ܫܝܺܚܳܐ (šīḥā, “Artemisia judaica”), as well as in Hebrew שִׂיחַ (síaḵ, “Artemisia judaica; shoot, shrub”) and in Akkadian 𒋛𒄿𒈝 (sīḫum, “wormwood”). Perhaps related to the root ش ي ع (š-y-ʕ), meaning “to spread”, “to sprout out”, “to come forth”; compare شَيْعَة (šayʕa, “bush, short tree”).
