نبيء

Arabic

Etymology

Considered to be the original form of ⁧نَبِيّ⁩ (nabiyy) by Sibawayh, but sometimes interpreted as a hypercorrection due to the loss of most glottal stops in Old Hijazi.

Noun

⁧نَبِيء⁩ • (nabīʔ) m (plural ⁧أَنْبِيَاء⁩ (ʔanbiyāʔ) or ⁧نُبَآء⁩ (nubaʔāʔ))

  1. (sometimes proscribed) Alternative form of ⁧نَبِيّ⁩ (nabiyy, “prophet”)

Usage notes

Considered incorrect by Sibawayh, but used in the Qur'anic reading tradition of Nafiʽ al-Madani.
