Kazakh

Letter

ٴ • (◌̈)

  1. A diacritic used at the beginnings of words to mark all vowels throughout the word as front vowels. (It has no sound value on its own.)

Usage notes

  • Not used in words containing ك‎, گ‎, or ە‎, as they also mark all vowels as front vowels.
  • If a word contains a hamza (or ك‎, گ‎, and ە‎) but also contains ع‎ or ق‎, vowels near ع‎ or ق‎ will remain back vowels but all other vowels in the word will be fronted.
