Etymology

From Proto-Iranian *čárHati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to move; to turn (around)”).[1][2]

Indo-Iranian cognates include Ossetian цӕрын (cæryn, “to live”), Pashto څرېدل (śaredal, “to pasture, graze”), Avestan 𐬗𐬀𐬭𐬁𐬥𐬍 (carānī, “I move, approach”), and Sanskrit चरति (cárati, “he moves”). More distantly related to Ancient Greek πέλω (pélō), Latin colō, Old Church Slavonic коло (kolo, “wheel”).
