Etymology

Borrowed from Pali khetta (“field; plot of land; arable land; site”), from Sanskrit क्षेत्र (kṣetra, “region; area; field”), whence also Thai เกษตร (gà-sèet, “cultivated land; field”). Cognate with Lao ເຂດ (khēt, “area; district; region; territory”), Khmer ខេត្ត (khaet, “province; district; territory”) and possibly Tocharian B keta (“garden-plot; field”).
