ჭიამაია

Georgian

Etymology

Related to ჭია (č̣ia), as it also covers bugs. Compare აბანოს ჭია (abanos č̣ia, “cockroach”).

Perhaps from ჭია (č̣ia, “worm, (bug)”) +‎ მაია (maia, A female given name), which explains the fact that the final ა (a) does not truncate in the singular declension. Some languages also use female given names for ladybugs. Compare Galician xoaniña (literally “little Xoana”).

  • Hyphenation: ჭი‧ა‧მა‧ია
