ᚹᛟᛞᚢᚱᛁᛞᛖ

Proto-Norse

Etymology

Dative of *ᚹᛟᛞᚢᚱᛁᛞᚨᛉ (*woduridaʀ /Wōdurīdaʀ/). Compound of *ᚹᛟᛞᚢᛉ (*woduʀ, “fury”) +‎ *ᚱᛁᛞᚨᛉ (*ridaʀ, “rider”). First element from Proto-Germanic *wōduz. Second element ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rīdaną (“to ride”).

The a-stem dative singular -ᛖ (-e /-ē/) comes from Proto-Germanic *-ai, with regular Northwest Germanic sound shift of *-ai > -ē (> Old Norse -i).
