From Proto-Tai *rakᴰ (“lacquer”). Cognate with Thai รัก (rák), Lao ຮັກ (hak), Northern Thai ᩁᩢ᩠ᨠ, Khün ᩁᩢ᩠ᨠ, Lü ᦣᧅ (hak), and Shan ႁၵ်ႉ (hâ̰k). Compare Sanskrit लाक्षा (lākṣā, “a species of plant”).
