From Proto-Tai *ʰmwɯjᴬ. Cognate with Thai หมี (mǐi), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩦ, Lao ໝີ (mī), Tai Dam ꪢꪲ, Shan မီ (mǐi), Ahom 𑜉𑜣 (mī), Zhuang mui, Nong Zhuang mue, Bouyei moil. Compare Old Chinese 羋 (OC *meʔ).
