Etymology

A Northwest Semitic loanword, attested as Ugaritic 𐎀𐎔𐎐 (ảpn, “wheel of a chariot”) and Hebrew אוֹפַן (ʾōp̄án, “wheel of a chariot”). The clipped variant has perhaps been connected vulgarly with πήνη (pḗnē, “spool”).
