공화국

Etymology

Sino-Korean word from 공화(共和) (gonghwa, “republic”) + 국(國) (guk, “country”), from an orthographic borrowing from Japanese 共和国(きょうわこく) (kyōwakoku).

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈko̞(ː)ŋβwa̠ɡuk̚]
  • Phonetic hangul: [공(ː)화국]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
