피리

Korean

Etymology

First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 피〮리 (Yale: pílì).

From Early Mandarin 觱篥 (bìlì, “reed wind instrument”). Doublet of 필률(觱篥) (pillyul, “reed wind instrument”), the standard Sino-Korean form.

Displaced earlier 뎧 (Yale: tyèh), itself a nativisation of 笛 (MC dek, “flute”).
