From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mɛːwᴬ² (“cat”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩯ᩠ᩅ, Lao ແມວ (mǣu), Lü ᦶᦙᧁ (maew), Tai Dam ꪵꪣꪫ, Shan မႅဝ်း (méao), Tai Nüa ᥛᥦᥝᥴ (máew), Phake မိဝ် (miw), Thai แมว (mɛɛo). Compare Zhuang meuz, Chinese 貓／猫, Vietnamese mèo, Khasi miaw.
