Alternative forms

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ənʲkʲɪj]

Suffix

-онький • (-onʹkij)

  1. Suffix used to form diminutive adjectives from other adjectives. Often the diminutive meaning is lost, or an intensifying meaning is imparted.
    ‎сухо́й (suxój, “dry”) + ‎-онький (-onʹkij) → ‎су́хонький (súxonʹkij, “nice and dry”)
    ‎широ́кий (širókij, “wide”) + ‎-онький (-onʹkij) → ‎широ́конький (širókonʹkij, “very wide”)

Usage notes

  • This suffix is used after roots ending in г, к, х to avoid palatalizing them. After other consonants, -енький (-enʹkij) is used.
  • The stress is drawn onto the syllable preceding the suffix.
