Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /uri/, [uɾi]
  • Hyphenation: -ური

Suffix

-ური • (-uri)

  1. An adjectival suffix appended to various words, often nouns, to make an adjective form denoting origination or having a quality: -an, -ic
    ‎კაცი (ḳaci, “man”) + ‎-ური (-uri) → ‎კაცური (ḳacuri, “manly”)
‎აფხაზი (apxazi, “Abkhaz”) + ‎-ური (-uri) → ‎აფხაზური (apxazuri, “Abkhazian”) (refers only to things)
    ‎დოკუმენტი (doḳumenṭi, “document”) + ‎-ური (-uri) → ‎დოკუმენტური (doḳumenṭuri, “documentary”)
  2. A surname suffix in the northern (mountainous) part of Georgia

Usage notes

  • When appended to nouns and proper nouns, such as country names or ethnicities, the -ish, -ic or -ian adjectives it produces only apply to things, such as abstract concepts like culture, or inanimate things like buildings, or non-human animals like dogs. For producting nationality-based nouns referring to people, another suffix, namely -ელი (-eli) is needed.
