De Normer

Dutch

Etymology

Potentially attested as northanheri in 918-948, attested with certainty as normaer in 1343-1344. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch nort (“north-, northern”) and meer (“lake”). It is possible, however, that the toponym is actually a reinterpretation of a compound of Old Dutch north (“north-, northern”) and heri (“sandy ridge”).
