Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unknown. Possibly a variant of the root in *jälki. The superficial similarity to Proto-Mongolic *jerge,[* 1] while noted, appears to be merely coincidental for want of any tenable explanation for a connection.

Notes

  1. Note that the Proto-Mongolic *j is an affricate /d͡ʒ/ (English j), not the same as the Proto-Finnic *j, which is a glide /j/ (English y).
