Etymology

Originally a variant of a regularly derived piedurtne, from the verb piedurt (“to pin, to attach (with a pin)”), ultimately derived from pie-, from Proto-Indo-European *prey (“at, near”)) + durt (“to stab, prick”) +‎ -ne. The original meaning was thus “something attached, sewn (on something else).”[1]
