spazieren

German

Etymology

Inherited from Middle High German spazieren (13th c.), from Italian spaziare, from Latin spatiāri.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ʃpaˈtsiːʁən/
  • (file)
  • Rhymes: -iːʁən

Verb

spazieren (weak, third-person singular present spaziert, past tense spazierte, past participle spaziert, auxiliary sein or (rare) haben)

  1. to take a walk, to stroll, to walk leisurely

Usage notes

  • The auxiliary is necessarily sein when a direction is given: Wir sind zum Teich spaziert. (“We took a walk to the pond.”) Without a direction, both auxiliaries are possible, but sein is still vastly predominant: In diesem Park sind/haben wir oft spaziert. (“We used to take frequent walks in this park.”)
