Etymology

From Proto-Norse *ᚹᚨᛃᛖᛊᚨᛚᛁᛉ (*wajesaliʀ /wajēsālīʀ/), equivalent to ve- (“miserably, (very) poorly”) +‎ sæll (“well, fortunate, happy”) (compare veill from Proto-Norse *ᚹᚨᛃᛖᚺᚨᛁᛚᚨᛉ (*wajehailaʀ) and also Proto-Norse ᚹᚨᛃᛖᛗᚨᚱᛁᛉ (wajemariʀ /wajēmārīʀ/, “ill reputed, infamous”)). This word must be fairly old; there is no i-umlaut on the second element. Compare with the younger and more transparent ósæll.
