Historical forms of the character 倜

References:

Mostly from Richard Sears' Chinese Etymology site (authorisation),
which in turn draws data from various collections of ancient forms of Chinese characters, including:

  • Shuowen Jiezi (small seal),
  • Jinwen Bian (bronze inscriptions),
  • Liushutong (Liushutong characters) and
  • Yinxu Jiaguwen Bian (oracle bone script).

Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *tʰɯːwɢ) : semantic 人 (“man”) + phonetic 周 (OC *tjɯw). This character did not appear in the original version of Shuowen, but was added in by Xu Xuan, who was not able to identify 周 (zhōu) as the phonetic due to the phonetic discrepancy between 周 (MC tsyuw) and 倜 (MC thek).
