Etymology

The 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of classical adjective 逸早し (ichihayashi), modern 逸早い (ichihayai, “quick, swift; harsh, unforgiving; fierce”).[1][2]

The use of 逸 (ichi-) is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).
