Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *pʰaːʔ) : semantic 氵 (“water; river”) + phonetic 甫 (OC *paʔ).

Etymology

Austroasiatic; compare *pʰaʔ > Vietnamese phá (“inlet, cove, lagoon”) (Schuessler, 2007). Indirectly related to Proto-Kam-Sui *pwaŋ⁵ (“bank, shore”) and Saek [script needed] (viaŋꟲ¹, “bank of a river”) by way of *-ʔ ~ *-ŋ alternation (ibid.).
